Daihatsu manipulated the crash tests of 88,123 cars produced. This information was disclosed by the manufacturer bearing the D logo in an official statement on Friday (4/28/2023).
“We apologize for betraying the trust of our customers and shareholders and causing great inconvenience and concern,” Daihatsu said in a statement.
Crash test handling of 88,123 Daihatsu cars was carried out in Ryuo, Shiga Prefecture, western Japan. The total involved four cars sold in 11 countries outside Japan, including Thailand and Mexico. Among the cars involved are the Toyota Yaris Ativ, the Perodua Axia, the Toyota Agya and a model still under development.
Yaris Ativ is a Toyota Motor Corp brand car, like the umbrella of Daihatsu. This car is sold in Thailand and Mexico and its production starts in August 2022. In Indonesia, Yaris Ativ is better known as Toyota Vio.
So Daihatsu manipulated the Axia crash test. This is a car produced by a joint venture between Daihatsu and Perodua in Malaysia, production has been carried out since February 2023 in the neighboring country. There are nonetheless Agya which is a Toyota-branded car, the production of the model whose crash test was manipulated is said to start in Indonesia in June 2023.
As for the Agya model involvement here, does it also affect the Agya car that was marketed in Indonesia? Till now there has been no official information from either Toyota Astra Motor (TAM) or Astra Daihatsu Motor (ADM) as holders of the brand in the country.
Toyota furious over Daihatsu betrayal
Daihatsu handling problem crash tests out of 88,123 cars, it also infuriated Toyota. Toyota Chief Commissioner Akio Toyoda said the manufacturer’s mistake with the D logo cannot be tolerated.
“This issue affects Toyota brand passenger cars, so we believe this is not only an issue for Daihatsu Motor, but also for Toyota Motor Corporation,” Toyoda said in an official statement.
He admitted that he would look for the real problem by understanding the facts that happened on the spot. At the same time, sincerely prevent similar incidents from happening again.
Akio Toyoda also guaranteed that nothing would be covered regarding Daihatsu’s handling of the 88,123-car crash test. He also pledged that Toyota won’t run, hide or lie like he did in 2009 on the issue of a massive recall.
“President Sato, who is the Chief Executive Officer, will take responsibility for correcting the production-related operational problems of Toyota and the group of companies. We will work responsibly. The Toyota group will work as a unit to give their all in order to win back the trust of customers as soon as possible,” explained Akio Toyoda.
